The Speaker I Didn’t See Coming

I’ve just returned from Chicago after experiencing the Global Leadership Summit live, and I can’t wait for what’s ahead here in Australia and New Zealand.

Every year there are speakers who challenge my thinking in unexpected ways. This year, it was Kwame Christian, bestselling author and CEO of the American Negotiation Institute.

When I think of negotiation, I picture high-stakes hostage scenes from Hollywood and intense boardroom conversations. But Kwame showed how negotiation is really about navigating everyday relationships – even conversations with your teenager.

What struck me most was his central idea: the key to influencing others is compassionate curiosity. Interestingly, it’s also the key to changing the conversation we have with ourselves. Asking non-threatening, open ended questions like who, what, when, where and how to unlock why they, or you, are feeling this way without asking the confrontational why question.

In this edition of Pulse, we’re also featuring insights from Vanessa Van Edwards, who shared a powerful message on the Surprising Micro-Habits of High-Impact Leaders at this year’s Summit. Be sure to check out her video clip on Public Speaking Techniques.

As we enter the Summit season across Australia and New Zealand, my encouragement is simple: lean in. Bring your team and come ready to learn.

GLS26 is packed with world-class leaders and practical insights that can strengthen your leadership wherever God has placed you.

I hope you’ll join us as we grow together and continue learning to lead where we are.
