Preparing your Heart for Christmas

with John Robertson | CEO | Global Leadership Network Australia & New Zealand

No matter how busy your December may be, you’re not likely to miss Christmas. But how do we prepare our hearts for Christmas amidst the busy and commercialised season to not miss one of the most beautiful things about Christmas – a season to generously give.

In our culture, we’re far more focused on getting than giving. Children craft Christmas wish lists filled with what they hope to receive – not what they hope to give. Don’t misunderstand me, there’s nothing wrong with presents – I like receiving them as much as anyone. But Jesus and Paul remind us that the joy of receiving simply cannot compare to the joy of giving (Acts 20:35).

While we enjoy buying presents for others, far too often our mindset becomes one of exchanging gifts rather than giving them. But what if you gave a gift where the only exchange that happened was the joy you received of giving a truly meaningful gift.

Like giving a gift of clean drinking water… or providing food to someone who would otherwise go hungry… or sharing what you have with someone the world overlooks… or choosing to go without so someone else can have what they truly need – that is a blessing deeper than any gift you could ever receive.

And this is where leadership comes in. Great leaders go first. They set the tone. They model generosity not as an occasional act, but as a way of life. When leaders give, others follow. Their generosity becomes contagious, shaping a culture that reflects the heart of God.

John 3:16 says, “For God so loved the world He gave…”

At Christmas, God didn’t exchange – He gave. As leaders, may we reflect His example. Enjoy the gifts you receive but never forget: the greatest joy comes from leading with a generous heart.

Merry Christmas!

The Global Leadership Network is grateful for our meaningful partnerships with World Vision and International Justice Mission. This Christmas, we invite you to explore the many ways you can bring hope and practical support to someone in need. How might you make a difference in someone’s life this season?

This Christmas, make freedom possible. Modern slavery is one of the most urgent human rights crises of our time, but it is also one we can end. International Justice Mission (IJM) partners with local authorities across 19 countries to rescue victims, bring criminals to justice, and strengthen justice systems to protect vulnerable people long-term.
IJM’s Gifts of Freedom catalog invites Australians to give the little things that mean everything – from a warm blanket for a rescued child to long-term aftercare for survivors rebuilding their lives. Each gift represents a real act of restoration, dignity, and hope.
By giving a Gift of Freedom, you help reflect God’s redeeming love to those still waiting for rescue.

This year, give something life-changing.  World vision gifts can bring hope and joy to families and loves ones.  Even better, you’ll support research-backed projects that put children at the centre.

When you buy a gift, your donation supports an area of work in our community projects. You help meet needs like healthcare, clean water and education.

So, your gift makes someone’s day and makes a difference! By buying our gifts, generous Australians like you are making a difference for families and communities around the world.
