Leadership Starts Before the Title
Amy Edmondson points out the difference between the terms ‘leader’ and ‘leadership’. She says leader is a role, but leadership is a behaviour. I think highlighting the difference is important because sometimes we tell ourselves we will step up when we’re given the title, the authority, or the platform. But leadership doesn’t start with a title. It starts with a decision.
The most influential leaders are not those who hold the highest roles, but those who consistently choose responsibility over passivity. They don’t wait to be asked. They notice what needs to change, where people need encouragement, where clarity is missing and they step in. Influence is built long before a title is given! It’s built in how you show up each day. In your attitude when things are unclear. In your willingness to serve when no one is watching. In your courage to speak with wisdom and humility when it matters.
The truth is that people follow consistency, character, and clarity far more than they follow titles. Self-leadership means taking ownership of your growth, your mindset, and your impact. It means asking, “What can I influence today?” rather than “What authority do I have?” When you lead yourself well, others begin to trust you. When they trust you, they listen. And when they listen, your influence grows. So don’t wait for permission. Don’t wait for position.
Step up. Take responsibility. Lead where you are.
Because leadership is not so much about where you sit, it’s about how you show up.
