Lent and Leadership: Why Margin Matters
I have a confession. In 30 years of pastoral leadership, I’ve never really practiced Lent. It simply wasn’t part of my church tradition. And if you’re like me, here’s the reality check: by the time you’re reading this, the 40-day journey to Easter is already well underway.
This year, however, I’ve been intentionally building more space and rest into my leadership rhythm. And that has drawn me toward Lent. Because clarity requires margin. Discernment requires stillness. And sustainable leadership demands more than constant output.
Lent invites us to slow down, pray, give generously, and practice self-control — not as religious routine, but as recalibration. It’s an opportunity to create room for God to reshape our priorities, purify our motives, and realign our leadership with His way, not just our pace.
The question isn’t whether Lent has been part of your tradition. The question is this: Will you use this season to create space for deeper, wiser, godly leadership?
