I once hiked in the remote southeast wilderness of Tasmania, navigating by map and compass through steep terrain, few trails, and no markers. On one particular day, thick fog reduced visibility to less than twenty metres. In those conditions, it’s easy to lose your bearings, take unnecessary risks, or find yourself completely off course. Every step feels uncertain. What mattered most wasn’t speed, but having the destination clearly mapped and making decisions with the bigger picture in mind. Progress was slower, sometimes paused altogether, but with clarity of direction, the destination was never in doubt.
Leadership today can feel much the same. A compelling long-term vision—three, five, even ten years out—is essential. It gives purpose, direction, and confidence to those you lead. But vision alone isn’t enough when the landscape keeps changing and the fog rolls in.
This is where strategy matters. Translating vision into clear priorities, achievable goals, defined actions, and shared responsibility enables steady progress—even amid uncertainty. It also gives leaders the flexibility to adapt without losing direction.
